Fail Zara · 2014
Striped pyjamas with a yellow star
🇮🇱 Israel🇪🇸 Spain🇬🇧 United Kingdom
What happened
Zara listed a children's 'sheriff' T-shirt: horizontal blue and white stripes with a six-pointed yellow star on the chest. It was pulled within hours of appearing in the Israeli store and Zara apologised, saying it was inspired by classic westerns.
What went wrong
The combination is the visual signature of a concentration-camp uniform. Intent was irrelevant to anyone who recognised it — and in Israel, everyone did.
The rule
Stripes plus a yellow star, a shower motif with a certain caption, numbers tattooed on an arm: some visual combinations are permanently spoken for.
Takeaway
Run product design past someone who knows twentieth-century European history, once, before it hits a factory.
