A £690 jumper in Black History Month
🇺🇸 United States🇬🇧 United Kingdom🇮🇹 Italy
What happened
Gucci sold a black balaclava jumper that pulled over the lower face with cut-out red lips. It was withdrawn in February 2019 — Black History Month in the US — after immediate comparisons to blackface. Gucci apologised and later appointed a global diversity officer.
What went wrong
The design reproduced minstrel imagery. Landing in February multiplied the reach: the date guarantees an audience already discussing exactly this history.
The rule
Awareness months raise the volume on everything you ship inside them, including the mistakes.
Takeaway
Audit the product pipeline against the calendar, not just the campaign calendar.
